I've always loved the Brother Cadfael mysteries and so I was interested to read "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett, a novel which deals with the same period of history, namely the 12th century conflict in England between the forces of Stephen and Maud to determine the succession to the throne. The action in this book even occurs primarily in a similar setting to the Cadfael stories, a monastery.

An excellent book, deserving of it's high reputation. A good fictional plot that along the way blends in historical events, the politics of the time and some interesting architectural information as well.
