I've always loved the Brother Cadfael mysteries and so I was interested to read "The Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett, a novel which deals with the same period of history, namely the 12th century conflict in England between the forces of Stephen and Maud to determine the succession to the throne. The action in this book even occurs primarily in a similar setting to the Cadfael stories, a monastery.

Best book I've read in a long long time. It started off slow, but after the initial 150 pages or so it picks up...and then there was no turning back. For the last few days I spent the majority of my day sucked into this story, and I was grateful it is only the first week of classes and I have not been given any homework because I know homework would have fell to the wayside if I still had more of this to read. I FINALLY got done with this book. Interesting personal side note about this book: while getting an exam by my doctor we got into an argument about this book... She claims she read it in three days on a camping trip. My argument was that 1. a sober person could not read this book in a month, let alone three days and 2. high on illegally pilfered prescription medication does not constitute a 'camping trip.' I got into the book when the story line focused more on Aliena and Jack as I really liked

Wow! This book takes you back to England just before and during Henry II. I couldn't wait to read each day.
