To read Forgotten Gardens and believe the mystery is the object of this book is to totally miss the meaning of this story. Yes, the women of Forgotten Gardens are seeking answers, but the answers they receive are more important than the solution to their mystery. Yes, Cassandra does resolve the question of how her grandmother, Nell, came to be on a ship to Australia at the age of four. Entrancing, scary, kept me captivated from the beginning. I have to admit that I was so frightened for these characters that I jumped to the end and read that before I was actually finished. Cheating, I know...but it helped calm me down--I just couldn't deal with some of the plot threads. Glad I read it, and glad that I read it around Mother's Day; the author knows what it is to crave your child. ...more

It's a long book and it's a complicated story. I can't imagine editing out one page. I simply loved it. I want to say the story is beautiful but that seems weird given the number of tragedies... still, it was beautiful. ...more

Good mystery. Very compelling and suspenseful. Liked the jumps between generations and locations. Strong plot twists. Not quite sure what category this falls in but an enjoyable read.

This was the first book I had read by Kate Morton. Although the size may seem daunting to some, this was a lovely story and book to read. There are enough twists and turns to keep the reader engaged and the back-and-forth between the past and present and information was revealed made it a tough book to put down once I started it.
