The Fractured Hues of White Light is a literary fiction novel about an autistic young woman, Samantha Ryder, but it isn’t a story about the effects of autism in the memoir format that is popular at the moment—it goes beyond those parameters of expectation—simply, it is a novel just like any other novel, the main character just happens to be a young woman who is a high-functioning ASD (or now known as PDD-NOS). The book is not just about her, it is also about the people around her, and the puzzli The Fractured Hues of White Light is a literary fiction novel about an autistic young woman, Samantha Ryder, but it isn’t a story about the effects of autism in the memoir format that is popular at the moment—it goes beyond those parameters of expectation—simply, it is a novel just like any other novel, the main character just happens to be a young woman who is a high-functioning ASD (or now known as PDD-NOS). The book is not just about her, it is also about the people around her, and the puzzling emotions pertaining to love, and how they love, familial love of mother, father, sister, brother, son and daughter, and the romantic love of lovers. It is about the sense of loyalty that can emerge from these emotional connections, and the obsessive and possessive nature of love. With that said, Samantha Ryder’s story does offer another point of view about the mysterious condition ASD, and how it can handicap an individual and those around her, the voices contained in the novel indicate how Samantha influenced her family and close friends since the day she came into the world…but it is also about how an individual with autism can overcome the disability and live her life in her version of ‘normal’. We all have our own version of ‘normal’, and in many ways, we are all square pegs that will never properly fit into the socially engineered round holes. This is a different novel; it is my second published novel through my independent efforts as Field Stone Press, dedicated to those of us who love the written word. The bright yellow book cover is inspired by Samantha’s love for the color yellow, and we used my small acrylic wash paintings entitled "Walking on the Sun" that I made specifically for the book. I wanted to keep it simple, and I wanted it to be bright. The color yellow is significant throughout the book, such as a yellow beach umbrella that belonged to her mother and yellow flowers from her lover. Yellow is a challenging color for an artist to work with without it becoming muddied up with the other colors in a painting...and this book was challenging for me to write. In spite of the ups and downs that can happen while writing such a complex novel, I feel that it is a good thing, and well worth the hard work involved in making it happen.
