This is an intriguing read, both as a historical document - as her title implies, Jefferson sets out to chronicle a very specific place and time - and as an autobiography. She avoids the slides into self-improvement sometimes too tempting to the autobiographical writer, and by giving a sense of time without holding rigidly to chronological order she is able to show how she, and the society around her, has sometimes changed and developed and sometimes held staunchly onto prejudiced ideas.
