After the amazing first volume, which in my opinion can be seen as a stand-alone masterpiece independent of the series, the second volume had some dreary moments, and that trend continued in the third. The saloon meetings of the Guermantes feature endless snobistic socializing and witless dialogue between mostly uninspired people that was often a chore get through.
