DNF @ 50%. Clearly I’m in the minority here. Almost all of my friends that read this have given it 4 or 5 stars and used words like brilliant and amazing. It didn’t work for me. I was just completely uninterested in the story and felt no connection to any of the characters.
This book has been widely read and reviewed, and I'm not sure I have a lot to add. It's a story of a dysfunctional family and their ghosts, both literal and metaphorical. There were moments of utter devastation and moments of extraordinary and haunting beauty.
I thought the relationship between JoJo and Kayla was very touching, and I loved Pop. Leonie was much more difficult to like, but an interesting character nevertheless. My only real criticism would be that there was not enough differentiat ...more
