Graham Greene is one of those authors I had always thought wouldn't really be to my taste. However, I am challenging myself to read as many as possible from the 1001 books list so when this came up as a Kindle Daily Deal for 99p I grabbed it.

This was good while I was reading it, and it's even better the more I think back on it. I wished I had read the print book instead of listening to the audiobook, though, as there are many passages I would have liked to stopped and thought about. This book deserves a reread in print. ...more

I really enjoyed this book and I'm anxious to try reading more by Greene. The writing in this had a sort of quiet beauty that I really liked. The story was interesting, although I found myself disliking Pyle. Innocent motives doesn't change the fact that he's hurting people. I'm curious to read some information about this book because I'm wondering if Pyle was supposed to be a symbol for America and our totally destructive idealism. When it suits us. After, yet again, rating another Greene novel probably lower than it deserved based on this masterpiece, I came to look at my review for this novel just to realize I never wrote one!

I read this novel over two years ago now, and I still think about it. I can still clearly remember most of the plot and how reading it made me feel. Greene's writing is out-of-this-world phenomenal.
