Port Orford is a little town on the Oregon coast that hadn't changed much over the years. It's claim to fame is the sinking of a commercial ship, the "Larry Doheny" by a Japanese submarine during World War 2. There are hundreds of wounded and they are brought to the town to be treated by an overwhelmed doctor. He enlists the aide of eighteen-year old Jennifer.
This sets off a long journey of change that will take Jennifer from her hometown to help with the war effort.

Needless to say, as the author of this book, I am giving it 5 stars. As the editor, I have read it many, many times. I love all the history and I particularly love the characters, Jennifer and Jack Long. They became real to me. I felt them and could see them in my mind's eye. Jennifer is a compilation of so many women I know, including my self. For Jack, I had a muse, whose face I could see every time I was writing him.
