Quirky characters and snappy dialog are what make this story work

Attorney at law Jamie Quinn has a very steady boyfriend Kip and the story opens with him telling her that he going to Australia for three months. Kip is going there in an attempt to do what he can to save the endangered Northern Hairy-Nosed Wombat. This sends Jamie into a fit of insecurity as she has just reconnected with Kip after a long hiatus.

This sends Jamie into a fit of insecurity as she has just reconnected with Kip after a long hiatus.
This story is a continuation of the earlier Jamie Quinn mysteries, yet knowledge of the earlier installments is not essential to understanding this one. In general the characters are re-introduced well enough so that there are no points of confusion.
The main plot point is that Jamie is retained by the wife (Nan) of noted attorney Marvin Glasser, a man so well known and connected that Jamie is told that she is the twenty-seventh lawyer Nan has contacted. Glasser is a powerful man that is feared by many, he is surrounded by bodyguards at all times and drives a new car every week.
Believing she is out of her league, Jamie demurs in taking the case but is convinced by her BFF fellow attorney Grace to take Nan’s case. This story once again involves good-hearted sleazebag P. I. Marmaduke Broussard III digging around for the dirt on Glasser and once again engaging in snappy dialog with Jamie.
Glasser is as nasty as his reputation, Jamie has to balance her feelings over Kip being gone with her involvement with the case, things get so bad that there is even a falling out between Jamie and Grace. A young orphan girl is also part of the story and Jamie becomes involved with her as well. In keeping with the style of the Quinn mysteries, there is no wild shoot-em-up or beat-em-up action, it is about a couple of girl lawyers taking on the case of their lives.
What makes this story go is what makes all of the Jamie Quinn mysteries work, the dialog between her and the other quirky characters. Even when things get challenging, there is never a shortage of smart remarks and quips. All ends well, no surprise with that. However, it turns out that attorney Marvin Glasser is not what he appears to be. In this case it is the quality of the journey that is exciting, not the ending.
