Technically, I’m giving this 3.5 stars but I don’t know how to do half a star, and if pressed, I'd have to round down only because I'm hard to please. I really (mostly) enjoyed this book and was wowed, not only by the pretty prose, but by the author’s voice. Her way of expressing even mundane things was entertaining and witty. But there was a lot of telling of events and backstory, which seemed more indulgent rather than necessary (and maybe a bit of a cheat; especially the hefty character backs
