MY THOUGHTS
The Mali Empire was known as the Mandingo Empire during 1230 and 1600. The word Mali means hippopotamus in the Mandinka language. Ms. Roman, as usual, takes the reader on a journey into a new land. You learn about the past and present. If you were born a girl you might have been names Wassa or Mariam and the boys might have been called Dango or Ibraham. You learn that the country followed the Islam faith. They lived in adobe homes with many rooms. This was of making the home kept in c ...more

Did you ever want to know what it was like to live somewhere else and in a time a long time ago. Carole Roman has actually brought us back in time to Mali when it was an ancient empire. It tells how people lived then, the customs, food and clothing.
To me, this book is not only for young children but for us adults as well. I wouldn't have even known that Mali existed back then (I know there is a country by that name now) and how they lived as well. We adults can learn just like the kids do.

Let's travel back to Ancient Mali. It's a time when the Mali empire was a world power. We can see how they lived and learn about their customs and traditions. Did you know Mali means " hippopotamus"? C'mon and learn even more with this book.
