Cowboys, and horses, and wagons - oh my!![]()
This book is centered around the idea of the old, Wild West.
Much like Little House on the Prairie, you and your whole family are going to claim a homestead.
A homestead is a large piece of property with a farm...that belongs to your family. But before you can settle there, you need to travel via covered wagon across thousands of miles.
You slept outside the wagon wrapped in an old quilt beside the wheel.Along the way, you get to learn all about ...more

The year is 1843 and people are leaving the east to start fresh in the west. Wagon trains were a safer way to travel that distance and have someone who knew what to expect. It was hot, dry and even muddy at times. Along the way you'd meet some people. Some were Indians and others were people traveling alone. Let's go!
The pacing of this book is fantastic. It gives you a chance to talk to your children about what you're reading. It's written in language your child will understand right away. Well ...more

“If You Were Me and Lived in…The American West” by Carole P. Roman, will take you, like she says, “in the time machine and travel to our past.” It started in Willamette Valley, a place where many people move from the east in the 19th century because of the excess flooding, so farming was hard. That’s how migration started– to look for good land to work it and survive.
It is amazing how they loaded their wagon (Conestoga), lined up their animals, a ...more

Another excellent book to add to Carole's If You Were Me and Lived in..Ancient Times series. Just like the previous books in this series, it covers in creative detail the different hobbies, chores, names, and settings from this time in history.
The pictures are well done and realistic, while perfectly illustrating the words. The writing is easy to follow with simple words and well d ...more

Lets travel back to the days of covered wagons and the unexplored prairie through another great book from a wonderful author. I love westerns and reading anything about the west. And in the book titled IF YOU WERE ME AND LIVED IN...THE AMERICAN WEST by Carole P. Roman, The American West came to life through skilfully written text and wonderful illustrations that seemed to jump right out of the pages at you. The west opened up new territory for people who wanted more space to live in, and weren'

I always admire authors who can take an educational subject and make it interesting and fun for a child to learn. It takes a special amount of balance to get the educational part of the story mixed with interesting and entertaining aspects. Author Carole Roman has done it perfectly with her series If You Were Me, excellent! An entertaining and insightful look at the American Midwest and what it would have been like to be crossing the plains in a wagon, farming, mining for gold and much more! Bri

Another great history book by Carole Roman. This one is about the American West and features how people lived in the 1800s. It is in story format and dwells on how they crossed the Great Plains from the Mississippi River to the Willamette Valley in Oregon.
I like how Carole describes the journey and the pictures are beautiful. She also adds a glossary and a Who's Who of the American West. This makes for a great learning book for children. ...more
