It was a bit of a slog until the last 100 pages, when it really picked up -- ever since Amina landed on the shores of the magical land ruled by the feathered 'court'. Descriptions of the otherwordly beings and natural elements on that island were a delight to read, stretching my imagination farther than it usually goes. It was quite a classic hero arc of Amina failing initially to defeat the foe, then becoming more powerful and returning to finish the job, full of glory. I look forward to the se ...more

I think this will be my book of the year. Absolutely amazing! I finished it and started it over again with my partner immediately. The audio narration is wonderful. I love reading about an adventurous mother my age who is still doing amazing things despite her bad knee. I am so excited for the next book! I love all of the characters and the setting.

I enjoyed this a lot! The tone of the framing device was a little annoying, but the info it added and the fact that it had some true payoff in the end mostly made up for that. Otherwise, this story was simply delightful.
