Very gripping, even though the whole point of the book was that the boys win. I did sometimes get a bit bored with the details of the boys' lives during summer vacation, but I supposed it was really setting the tone that these were just regular guys who beat all the highly trained Germans and the super rich British, as well as those privileged East Coast competitors.

It almost makes me want to try rowing. But then I look at the boats and remember why I have no intention of ever doing that. Nope. ...more

great read to get you pumped for the summer olympics! definitely shed some tears along the way and made me miss the water. I think it would still be enjoyable even if you've never rowed before. ...more

Most everyone knows about Jesse Owens victory over the Germans in the 1936 Olympics but there were others who won over the Germans. This is the story of the rowers from Washington State. The eight man crew was able to succeed under very difficult circumstances. It takes the boys from their overcoming poverty and other problems.
