OKAY it's maybe not a 5-star book but I liked it more than I expected, and it has what is potentially my favorite opening paragraph to any book ever. Plus, the show rocks.

I think because this is a classic I expected more. I had always thought of it as horror and it is definitely more American Gothic. That being said the ending left my chest tight and Jackson really does have a way with words.
What is it that plagues the walls of Hill House? Is it ghosts, poltergeists, or just pure evil lurking beneath its walls. The characters are all interesting and their immediate banter is both endearing and amusing. As Hill House spreads its grips to the people within the ...more

I'll be honest, I was a little lost through all of this. In theory, this is the kind of story I like, with a lot left to be interpreted or extrapolated, and a lot of implications to be slowly pondered on one's own. But in practice, I was left feeling a bit underwhelmed. It started and ended all at once, with no time to really sink into the mood, which is something I tend to prefer with these kinds of stories.
