I'm really sad I never read this earlier! A wonderful coming of age fantasy story that doesn't fall into the normal trappings/cliches of sword and sorcery fantasy. Update on reread: Still found it nicely written and am honestly less bothered by the female characters this time around, but I just didn't connect to the story as much so bumping it down to 3 stars.

I picked up this book at Powell’s because it was a classic of the genre I’d never read. In the middle of an Eragon re-read at the time, I noticed le Guin’s name in the acknowledgments and became interested to explore her works.

I am so glad I finally stopped sleeping on Earthsea. This is such a well-written fantasy. I wasn’t even 1/3 through before I started wanting to re-read just to pick apart how she unspools her world-building, how she paces Ged’s adventures, how her prose is so simple yet i

I read this as a child and loved it. I still love it.

Ged aka Sparrowhawk is from Gont and he has the ability to be a wizard.
