I really liked the story behind the book. As a disclaimer, I've seen the first hobbit movie, and am a huge fan of the original movies (didn't like the hobbit movie so much as the original LOTR movies, but more than the hobbit book) and I think, to some small extent, that has nocked down my rating to 3.2 because .....well, its easier to watch a movie, and why read all of the lore in the book when you already KNOW all the lore? I only saw the movie once so it was easy to imagine the story as the book says and compare to the parts I remember of the movie. Too many words I didn't and names I couldn't pronounce made this difficult to read at times. The characters were also long-winded.
