CW: Brutal violence, rape, acts of war

3.5 . The story was good and had an original take on WWII fiction. It was both non-linear timelines with multiple narrators and it kept the story interesting. The first chapter was a bit confusing because it spanned 10 years without any sorts of breaks but after that the timeline was more clear.

The characters were good. Marie-Laure, a blind French girl, and Werner, an orphaned German boy, are the focus of most of the chapters. A German gem expert named Von

When I finally sat down with this book and read it, it was absolutely wonderful. It was well done and a read that will stick with me for some time.

Kuitenkin jokin jäi uupumaan, eikä päästy odotusten tasolle. Kirja oli melko pitkäveteistä ja pikkutarkkaa kirjoittamista, jaariteltiin pitkiä aikoja ja sitten lopussa kauhean hätäinen päätös kirjalle, se tuntui liian helpolta ratkaisulta. While the book took me a little bit to get into, once I was a quarter of the way through, I couldn't put it down.

I both adored and feared this book. I ended up doing a lot of research about some of the specifics of WW2 that I wasn't aware of previously, or hadn't considered fully, and the intimacy of the book - young German soldiers, ordinary French people dealing with occupation - struck a chord and brought the vast, unfathomable horror that was the war into a more personal light.
