Chambers aces the world-building in this book. What she fails to do, however, is provide a story set within that world.
Ok, so that's not totally true - there was a bit of a plot, but it really didn't get going until the last 80 pages or so of this 440 page novel. Not until our crew arrived in Toremi space. And that's a long time to wait for any significant story development.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. In the beginning it felt very similar to a both Firefly and Star Trek: Voyager or Deep Space Nine, so I wasn't sure how much this would suck me in.
But it did.
Completely.
The multi-character plot is well-balanced, interestingly written and the story branches off quite quickly into very cool character developments. I think the variety present in the crew of the Wayfarer is great, and the way they interact with each other could teach humanity an awful lot. I liked tha ...more

The Wayfarer is a wormhole tunnelling ship crewed by a mismatched group of humans and aliens. Rosemary joins the crew to improve efficiencies by sorting out the most important of jobs - paperwork. Rosemary is trying to escape her past, and her family, so is apprehensively looking forward to living with new people and travelling the universe. The alien (and human) members of the team come from a wonderfully interesting set of different cultures, physical characteristics, and social norms.
