Frodo undertook his quest out of love, to save the world he knew from disaster entirely at his own expense, if he could; and in complete humility, acknowledging that he was wholly inadequate to the task.
Much is made in contemporary fantasy about the subversion of the romantic and idealist tropes of the classical fantasy works, and of course The Lord of the Rings is one of the works that established a lot of these tropes.
