not what I was looking for wrt Taiping—tightly focused on the main leaders and doctrine. Some interesting local color (river pirates, European gun runners, siege tactics) but left out a lot of wider context.
For instance, the question of why they were able to attract so many followers so quickly is almost completely unaddressed. Same for the larger effects of the war on China.
