I think it's best summed up by someone on reddit who was comparing it to the Forever War: "remember that Haldeman served in combat and Heinlein didn't and dreamed he did.... The difference is that Heinlein sees combat as thrilling and exciting, Haldeman sees it is painful and damaging. Heinlein understand training (and ST is just a book about bootcamp) and wishes he could have seen combat.
