Couldn't help but love this. Book has four main parts: Orwell's time in the trenches climaxing in a daring night raid on a fascist held parapet, the fight over the telephone exchange, his overall analysis of the war and the Stalinist repression of the POUM, his injury and recuperation and escape from Spain.

This was maybe my third attempt to read this, btw. Had trouble following the factions when I tried to read it as a teen, but after reading the excellent Spain in our Hearts I have a decent gri ...more

I first read this book when I was in high school. Reading it again, I'm struck by how reckless Orwell's actions were. The battle scenes are still tense, but what struck me this time was the sense of confusion and aggrievement about the revolution fading away while he and his comrades were fighting on the front lines. As I am writing this, Ukrainian President Zelensky has called for volunteers. I pray that those volunteers don't suffer the same fate as Orwell's comrades. ...more
