Wow!
Deadhouse Gates by Steven Erikson is one of the best fantasy novels I have ever read for many reasons. The Characters seemed much more fleshed out in this book than the previous one. I cheered for them, I got mad at them, I ached for them. I hope that this standard of character development continues throughout the rest of the Malazan books, as it helps to enrich the experience. I loved so many of the characters, choosing a favourite seems impossible. Coltaine, Fiddler, Kulp, Icarium, Mappo, ...more

I love the characters and the world S.E has created, but this book is so difficult at times, I think that’s due to reader error. Unlike gardens of the moon, where you mind had some creative freedom to wander with the narrative, I felt like if you walked too far off the path set for you in this book it became frustrating and I found it really hard to picture where the characters where. The ending of the book is very good though.
