This book is confusing, hard to get into, has terrible poems and is absolutely fantastic. The complexity of the world Erikson created is just stunning. It takes one third of the book to get a faint idea about what is going on and from then on, you are just swept by the tide. The book gathers momentum and culminates in a breathtaking all-action ending. Considering that this is the first volume of a ten book series, it has a proper ending and plot resolution. I will never, ever get tired of re-reading these books. The whole series is solidly written. Fantastically huge story acrs, exquisite character development, action you can taste and smell, magic that doesn't make you roll your eyes. Steven Erikson, the only author I've read that could make me feel sad over a scorpiod being stomped.

I'm stalled about 60 pages into this book. Not sure when I'll pick it up again, but it came across as a poor George RR Martin copy, with lots of complicated terms, a lot of bloodshed and not much readability. It's still in the house so I hope I'll get to finish it soon.
