One Second After is a book that hits the reset button. An EMP has devastated America, all the technology that we take for granted has become completely useless. It’s difficult to imagine what life would be like in this scenario. No more cell phones, no more computers, no more McDonald’s greasy hamburgers. This might be one of the scariest books, at least in the top five, that I have ever read. And it also contains one of the few battle scenes that have made me sob. I read a lot of fantasy and that means a lot of battles, but I rarely sob at battles. Usually battles bore me. Everyone should read this, heck even the government wants you to (don't take that as a deterrent, there is good reason)and for other left wingers like me, don't let Newt being the guy who wrote the forward trick you into think

This is a simple story of what could/would happen if America falls victim to an EMP attack.
There isn't any plot twists, mysteries, or cliff hangars - it's a down and dirty look at how people can react to a long term survival situation. After all the televised coverage of the tragedy that was the aftermath of Katrina it's easy to visualize the world that the author has created in these pages.

Okay, I'm glad that I'm not the only one who noticed the of/have issue.
A bit too much war/political/historical chat.
I don't know. It just wasn't well written. However, the plot really drew me in. Made me cry. 3 times.
Oh. And WAY too much language. As in poorly used, unnecessary cursing that made me cringe. ...more

Not a bad post-apocalyptic story, but way too much "message," overall flat characters and plenty of cliche to go around.
