This is the story of Lamar Reed; a man fighting for survival when a strange new virus nicknamed "Hamelin's Revenge" infects humans from rats and causes them to become the walking dead.

Lamar battles his way out of downtown Baltimore trying to keep himself from being eaten by the living dead. He is joined by a young boy and girl, Malik and Tasha who have lost their mum to the dead.

Shelves: zombie-adventures, labyrinth-mythology

Brian Keene has often expressed how he is finished with zombies, more specifically he feels he has written everything he wants to say about the undead. Dead Sea feels like his last statement on the zombie genre, because we don't explore too much uncharted territory that wasn't already revealed in The Rising. Even though Brian has expressed a disenchantment with the zombie franchise, Dead Sea does continue to deliver genuine fears that were felt in Earthworm Gods and Darkness on the Edge of Town. Brian Keene has often expressed how he is finished with zombies, more specifically he feels he has written everything he wants to say about the undead. Dead Sea feels like his last statement on the zombie genre, because we don't explore too much uncharted territory that wasn't already revealed in The Rising. Even though Brian has expressed a disenchantment with the zombie franchise, Dead Sea does continue to deliver genuine fears that were felt in Earthworm Gods and Darkness on the Edge of Town. If you read his Earthworm Gods or Rising series, you will know what to expect here. Throughout the novel Brian masterfully stacks the odds against the survival of mankind, while keeping me entertained with characters who I genuinely care about. Some of the dangers are a song and dance that a veteran like me has witnessed already, however it is still a fun one that has become a guilty pleasure of mine.

I give Dead Sea a 4.5 stars out of 5. Like said in the review above I did enjoy this story very much. It isn't my favorite story by Brian Keene (that honor goes to The Lost Level), but he did pull in my attention and I did have fun reading it. After reading Brian Keene's work for so long, I expect no less from the man who is behind the Labyrinth mythology. I can't fault this book too much because I have read most of Brian Keene's stories already. I feel like any complaints I have against the book are insignificant and because I read so much of his work in such a short amount of time. That is why my review is so lenient despite the minor complaints I have pointed out. The Labyrinth mythology is kept to a bare minimum this time around, however there are some awesome references to a alternate Frankie (From The Rising) and The Black Lodge for those who have read Last of the Albatwitches. If this is one of your first Brian Keene books, I totally recommend checking this one out before The Rising or Earthworm Gods.

If you want a happy ending don't read this book. I like the ending, and the book went at a nice pace full of zombies. The Unlikely character makes it even better and believable. ...more
