It sure wasn't easy to survive if you were a woman in the 18th Century. Moll Flanders starts out life with no advantages. Born in Newgate Prison with no one to take care of her, she uses her wits (and body) to not only survive, but thrive in society. Definitely a memorable character!

I enjoyed this book. It does show that Moll was mostly forced into crime because of women's place in society at that time, though she was born into it as well, her mother having also been a criminal. The end of this edition contained an appendix by Defoe, a Puritan, arguing for the education of women, particularly in the fields of music, dancing, languages, history, and literature, which is historically interesting.
