The first third of this book is a thriller, the second third a soap opera, and the final third is a murder mystery, and the whole thing is a behemoth. There's also a touch of romance near the end. The principle message through almost all of its 1200 pages (1400 in some editions) is that "revenge is good." There are a few instances near the end of the book where the Count of Monte Cristo wonders if perhaps the revenge should have been left to God. Those brief comments provide a small Band-Aid to

This is 1200 pages long and took me nearly four months to read but it was definitely worth the time. The characters are memorable, the language is brilliant, and the details of 19th-century European history are fascinating.
I think fiction that inspires me to do some research is most awesomely awesome.

OMG!! Despite the fact that Peter & I have been discussing what book to read next for about a week and we did a chapter countdown, I am having a hard time dealing with the fact that it's over. :'(
There was ONE chapter in this book that I did not like. And the rest I adored. This book captivated both Peter & I by the first half of the first chapter. I had been lugging it around with me for the last 10+ years, not knowing the treasures that lay within it. I almost took it to a swap meet without ev ...more

I was amused that in the introduction it said that there was not an ounce of literary merit to this novel, just pure swashbuckling fun. What a blatant attempt to get kids to read it. Which they should, since I can't imagine anyone not loving this book. It's exciting and easy to read, which is not often the case with older classics.

Right now, I feel as if I can't get away from this book. It's everywhere. It's on every single Goodreads list I look at, and for some reason people have been talking about it. I think the universe is trying to tell me that I have to read it as soon as possible. Okay, universe. You win.

how to hold a grudge and mastermind a revenge.
some favorite parts:
"We are always in a hurry to be happy, M. Danglars; for when we have suffered a long time, we have great difficulty in believing in good fortune."
"Cedant arma togae"
"He recollected the prayers his mother had taught him, and discovered a new meaning in every word; for in prosperity prayers seem but a mere medley of words, until misfortune comes and the unhappy sufferer first understands the meaning of the sublime language in which ...more

The story of Edmund Dante falsely accused and thrown into prison is long but it's such a gripping story that I read it in five days while I had the flu!

Despite being paid by the line (which is inevitably why this serialized novel is so long), this truly is a masterpiece. This translation is slightly more modern, which made it easy to read. I was totally engrossed and couldn't put it down.
