A superb novel even in translation, though some witticisms, jokes, and quotes do lose their original force. Well-drawn characters with clear motives, memorable situations, moral turpitude, the machinations of the spurned and neglected, socio-economic upheaval and societal change… this novel is packed with heady stuff presented in great detail (or effectively alluded to in the margins) and that makes for an excellent and troubling tale.
