Oh the French! Balzac has the knack of writing a wicked story and deftly turning it into a morality tale, leaving me wondering which is the real Balzac.
Sex is the universal currency in Balzac’s 19th century Paris. For position, for lust, for money and, occasionally, for love. Each member and associate of the Hulot family is an unequal measure of scoundrel, martyr and guilelessness. A mix which makes for pleasantly sordid reading.
