I chose this for my book club and I was pleasantly surprised by how much we all enjoyed the story since I was aware of Hardy' s tendency toward melancholy. The characters are provincial yet interesting and the setting is so prominent and detailed that it is fascinating. Hardy's vocabulary requires a dictionary at times because some of the words are not in use any longer. All in all a good read.
