What Members Thought
Everyone was right!!
This has been one of the most moving books I have read and I read a lot of books. It moved me to tears, made me smile, and made me cheer. It has made me think too, about some of the injustice in this world. And I am proud to say it has made my world expand and made me think.

This is a great book. It brings up subjects that everyone in the damn world should care about and unfortunately is forgotten by most.
It deals with racism and prejudice. About having a voice. About growing up in two completely different worlds and not being able to act just like yourself in both. Being afraid of being too white or too black at the same time. Does it even make sense ? It shouldn't, but it does.
I know that there are many reviews that will bring up how great this book is, so I'll st ...more

I'm going to say something about this book that I don't think I have ever said before - If you are going to read at least one book this year, make sure it is this one!
At first I though I wouldn't enjoy this book and it wouldn't live up to the hype. Little did I know, I was completely wrong. I first started reading it and again I wasn't sure if i'd enjoy the writing style as sometimes I can't read slang dialogue very easily. Again, I was proven completely wrong. I adored this book from start to f ...more

This is the longest time I have ever spent reading a book. The reason - it’s excellent and I savoured every word.
This is book is about oppressed people and how the oppressed should stand together and use their voices for good.
The book has many themes; issues of justice, friendship, family, personal and group identity in a straight-forward, relevant and sometimes funny way.
A must read!

I read a 3 chapter excerpt and I'm already emotionally involved. I'm so glad that there's a book like this shedding light on today's problems with police brutality, the BLM movement and in the general sense, a YA book told from the perspective of someone other than a white person. Needless to say I'm highly anticipating the release!

Starr lives in a rough part of town and after one of her best friends gets shot in a drive by shooting when they’re ten, Starr’s parents have her attend a private school that’s safer. Now Starr is sixteen and she witnesses her other childhood friend getting fatally shot by a police officer. Her friend did nothing to provoke the shooting. This is a powerful novel about much more than racism. It’s also about choices, bravery, integrity and helping others. This book has a lot of swearing which is a

"I’ve seen it happen over and over again: a black person gets killed just for being black, and all hell breaks loose. I’ve Tweeted RIP hashtags, reblogged pictures on Tumblr, and signed every petition out there. I always said that if I saw it happen to somebody, I would have the loudest voice, making sure the world knew what went down.

This was sitting at a solid 4 stars until it went ahead and brought me to tears. Equally heart-warming and brutal, The Hate U Give is an important novel that sheds light to police brutality – an issue that needs to be spoken about.
