Hey Book Peeps

This first book was a lot of fun. Harper reminded me of a mix of Reese Witherspoon's character in Legally Blonde and the Charlotte from The Princess and The Frog. She is overly organized and chair woman of everything and I love how driven she is. David is the total opposite of Harper. He is aloof and quirky and there is a cute love-hate between the two.

I listened to the audiobook while reading along with a physical copy. The accent made it a bit difficult at first but got me more immersed in the story and once I got used to it was a nice clear voice that I was able to quicken the pace to over 2.6X speed. I would say it was a pretty easy read.

I liked how the characters were developed and thought it was very catchy and easy to get into, and want to keep reading.

Harper is very "southern belle" type and I enjoyed reading from her stu 4.25/5 stars

Harper is very "southern belle" type and I enjoyed reading from her studious and perfectionist yet witty and amusing POV. She is the overachiever and model student.
She has best friend, Bee who is very loyal and always there for her.
Her "perfect" boyfriend Ryan, the jock who is very nice and good for her.
And enemy/rival/life-competitor David who has unusual fashion sense and very passionate and studious, similar to Harper.

The book opens on Homecoming night before Harper is to be awarded Homecoming queen. Except she has a problem! SHE FORGOT HER LIPGLOSS! (so after being lent some by BFF Bee *coming in clutch*) Harper heads to the bathroom where she meets the janitor who is dying and unexpectedly breathes into her and mumbles something about penguins...I mean paladins. After being attacked by history teacher she realizes that she now has superhero-like fighting skills and ends up stabbing him with her shoe and killing him. And then a vomit-session, sub-par "crowning session", a scandalous article, an air slap, and some research later she realizes she is a Paladin. {*Urban Dictionary* : Paladin
The Paladin is a class of Warrior that is fully devoted to kindness and ridding the Universe of Evil.} But making matters worst she is tasked to defend David.

Now it gets a bit gritty with all the information that we learn about "Oracles, Paladins, and Mages..." but it is probably similar to how Harper feels so I will take it is an authors artistic vision...? It was a lot to comprehend in such a short time...

When Harper and David went to go to the "scholarship interview" and everything went wrong but they were a bit prepared and 2-1 worked in their favor. But then Blythe (the supposed interviewer who turned out to be another Mage trying to unleash crazy power to "Alaric" David, *using Alaric as a verb*, poofed out of their sight.) I was kind of like are you dumb? The have her tied to a chair and are interrogating her and then Blythe even says that SHE CAN JUST "POOF" OUT OF PLACES, like she did at the pool. Like come on, of course she is going to escape then, and then also couldn't she have disappeared while she was tied up to get out of that situation? I am not too clear on the logistics. And then another thing, WHY WOULD THEY TRUST ANYTHING SHE SAYS? Like they wanted to bring her to Saylor and ask her how to get out of there, and she tells them oh just drip this unknown liquid on you, she could have probably easily killed them and that part wasn't very believable but that scene was necessary for the story's development so idk...its alright...just a bit far-fetched.

I really enjoyed the interaction and budding romance between Harper and David and really thought that that added to the story. I mean they actually used the words "straight-up teen angst" (pg. 246) in this story and I am all about that no matter how hard I try. I love the fluff.

Great action, witty bants, interesting plot, likable characters, fluff, teen-angst...what more could I ask for? Great story and I am excited to read the next book but have heard that the second book is not as good...I'll see soon enough for myself! ...more

Shelves: 4-stars, favorites

Not sure if I should give this book 4 stars or 4.5 stars... overall I really really enjoyed it however there were some plot timeline inconsistencies which seriously bugged me...like it was so obvious how did no one else pick them up before this book went to print. The characters and the writing I absolutely adored! I would definitely recommend reading it if you want a fun, chill, easy fantasy read.
