Ein flüssig zu lesender Roman mit dem Manko, dass die Handlung gefühlt nie richtig vorankommt. Anfangs lässt sich das noch verschmerzen, ist doch die erzählerische Stagnation Ausdruck für die innere Verfassung der Protagonisten. Dazu umgibt die kleine Hausgemeinschaft aus dem pflegebedürftigen Gerschom Wald und seiner Schwiegertochter, in die der ehemalige Student Schmuel Asch eindringt, eine der Spannung zuträgliche Aura des Geheimnisvollen. These deep and strong deliberations are framed by the story of the student Shmuel Ash (אש – “fire” in Hebrew) in Jerusalem of the 60s. Having been ditched by his long-time girlfriend Shmuel takes a job as caretaker and companion of the old Gershom Wald. Wald’s son was killed in the War for Independence in 1948. Since then he lives with his mysterious daughter-in-law, Atalya, in the house of his former friend Shealtiel (Hebrew for “I asked God”) Abrabanel, a fictitious character. Abrabanel opposed the foundation of Israel as a Jewish state by Ben Gurion. In his eyes there should have been a state of both Jews and Palestinians on equal terms. His views have since been seen as treason, so he got deprived of all his functions and ended his life in reclusion to his house. But Shmuel too is a traitor, a traitor of his family, who cannot understand, why he abandoned his studies and barely keeps contact with them.

It is the story of Judas/Jehuda that makes me glad that I read this book. The other plots, however, did not convince me. In hindsight I might have saved some effort and time by reading Amos Oz essay "Jesus und Judas" instead.

PS: I increased the rating to four stars as this book still occupies my mind. Books with such a lasting impression deserve a higher rating. ...more
