I thought this book was a bit slow to start but when I got further in I got hooked. I don't normally like books that are narrated by children because it is a very difficult thing to get right. The trick this author uses is that he is telling us the story as a memory from 40 years later. In this way he can use more adult language and it really works well. If you are looking for a plot driven book, read no further. What makes this book so marvelous is the writing, the depth and the characters.
There are a number of stellar 5 star reviews already posted by popular reviewers, so I am not going to repeat the regular things such as who or what this is about. Character development, intriguing plot, and lucid writing; this book has it all. A boys coming to age story amidst a community of decent characters and the landscape of americana. Frank encounters death, racism, the damages of war, broken promises, and loving loyalties. Who is to say whether all that forces his growing up or his growing up enables him to see much of what was already there.
