Great character study and the writing flowed seamlessly. The plot is everyday life and the action is living, surviving and growing up in a poor immigrant Irish family in Brooklyn, New York in the 1900s. Be prepared to be engrossed by all the grim and ordinary details of the Nolans' day to day lives.
A true master writer doesn't have to have a flashy theme or other worlds to make ordinary life riveting. Betty Smith is a master author. I definitely recommend it to everyone I know.

It was interesting to hear about times in the early 1900's but the book was very very slow. It took me a week to read it when It should have taken two days. ...more
