Francie Nolan might be one of my very favorite fictional characters.

The book starts out in 1912 and makes it way forward, we meet 11 year old Francie as she's sitting on her balcony watching a tree sprout up through the vapors and the fire stairs, against all odds this tree is continuing to grow. I 1st read this as a kid, and couldn't/didn't appreciate it enough at that time. I didn't realize that I was holding a precious gem. Re-reading as a teen, it quickly became one of my favorite books of all time, and one that I now constantly re-read. This one is 4.5 stars! A classic that I never read in high school or college. Wonderful coming-of-age story. Reminds me that we are so protective of children today and what the true face of poverty is like. Life expectancy for these characters is so low. In some ways, we've come a long way and in others there is still a lot of work to be done. ...more
