Natalie Jenner is now on my “must read” author lists! I really liked her first book, so I was eager to read “Bloomsbury Girls” which has a few characters that appear in both books.
This time we are in post-war London, which can still be a depressing place. Most of the action takes place at a bookstore (Bloomsbury Books) with three strong female characters. Of course, none of the women are top leadership at the bookstore, but they make everything work behind the ...more

Bloomsbury Books is an old fashioned bookshop run by men and strictly adhering to the general manager’s fifty one rules. But in 1950 the world is changing. It's 1950 and women are fighting for their rights and acknowledgment. Three women come to together working at an old dusty man-run bookstore. One woman highly educated for the time, fighting for her own recognition. One woman recovering from the loss of her fiance' in the war. One woman, married with children, trying to both finance the family and help her war traumatized husband. All three wanting more, dreaming their own dreams in post war London.

I loved this fun reading, historical fiction, swipe at patriarchy. The Bloomsbury girls are the three female employees of the hidebound bookstore run by men at the start of the 1950's. When the general manager, who promulgated the 51 rules which head each chapter and which stifle any creativity in the store, falls ill, things start to change as the woman play bigger roles. But once he returns and tries to bring "order" back, things really start to fall apart.

Let me first state for the record, I had not read “The Jane Austen Society” prior to reading this book. I have since found out that “Bloomsbury Girls” is a continuation of the life of one of the characters from the first book. Although this book can stand on its own, it is quite possible that if I had read the first book, I would have enjoyed this one more. I did find it to have quite a slow pace though. A little too slow at times.

I loved The Jane Austen Society, this not so much. The characters just weren't as likeable.
