Natalie Jenner is now on my “must read” author lists! I really liked her first book, so I was eager to read “Bloomsbury Girls” which has a few characters that appear in both books.
This time we are in post-war London, which can still be a depressing place. Most of the action takes place at a bookstore (Bloomsbury Books) with three strong female characters. Of course, none of the women are top leadership at the bookstore, but they make everything work behind the ...more

Bloomsbury Books is an old fashioned bookshop run by men and strictly adhering to the general manager’s fifty one rules. But in 1950 the world is changing. So does Evie Stone who, after being denied an academic position that went instead to her male counterpart, ends up cataloging books at Bloomsbury. But she has plans for more than that. Will these three women be able to achieve the ...more

It's 1950 and women are fighting for their rights and acknowledgment. Three women come to together working at an old dusty man-run bookstore. One woman highly educated for the time, fighting for her own recognition. One woman recovering from the loss of her fiance' in the war. One woman, married with children, trying to both finance the family and help her war traumatized husband. All three wanting more, dreaming their own dreams in post war London.

Post WWII this book focuses on life in London after the war in a bookshop. Overall, I enjoyed the book and appreciated the aspect the author brought up about women in the book world. We learn and see how working women are treated and the rules they must follow working at Bloomsbury Bookshop. What I also found interesting was the prejudices women also experienced at authors. Reason for the 3 rating rather than a four was it seemed to get very drawn out at times and I did do the audio version and

I'm not sure how I ended up with this title without realizing it was a second book in a series. I think it stands alone but about mid-way through I had the distinct feeling the author was "re" introducing characters I should already know.
I love a good bookshop story. I love strong female characters. And I love mid-century Europe. So I was pre-disposed to like this, and I did.
Maybe a little too overt for my test. I don't need to be told the lessons characters are learning; I'd rather surmise that ...more
