What Members Thought
This book should come with a warning to have a box of tissues handy. Had I known, it would have made the awkwardness of my husband walking in the kitchen to find me weeping at the counter over the author’s words. Was it the onions? No. Michelle Zauner had me crying at the first chapter. From her complex relationship with her parents, especially her mother, to her mouth-watering description of the Korean meals prepared by her mother and aunties, this is a beautiful story of a young woman finding

A memoir of Zauner during her mother's death from cancer and how food brought the family together.
I was back and forth on this book. Sad but a raw and real description of her relationship with her mother who was Korean and moved to the states after marrying her father who was an American. I loved all the food descriptions. Zauner talks extensively about Korean food and what her mother, grandmother and two aunts cooked and ate and she also tries her own hand at cooking after her mother's death. ...more

I honestly had no idea who Michelle Zauner was, nor had much interest in the topic, before picking this up. I was very pleasantly surprised. Her words a full of poetry, and deep memory and emotion. Her descriptions of foods, which might seem excessive in another context, instead wrote a love letter to both her mom and her Korean culture, with the bittersweetness of memory of things--and people--now lost. I listened to the audiobook read by the author, and while I didn't understand all of the Kor

It feels weird to rate memoirs as if I can judge the quality of someone’s life. This book was heart-wrenching and gripping. I’m glad it was my final book for this challenge as I feel emotionally scrubbed raw from the inside out after reading it. Highly recommend.
