This book should come with a warning to have a box of tissues handy. Had I known, it would have made the awkwardness of my husband walking in the kitchen to find me weeping at the counter over the author’s words. Was it the onions? I was back and forth on this book. Sad but a raw and real description of her relationship with her mother who was Korean and moved to the states after marrying her father who was an American. I loved all the food descriptions. I picked this based on its title, for some reason thinking it would be a light, humorous read. It’s not at all. It’s a sentimental memoir about a twenty something who loses her mother to cancer. I haven’t been lived to tears by a book in a long time, but this one did it. I think I would have appreciated this more if I was more familiar with Korean cuisine, which plays a major role. But still, it was very moving.
I honestly had no idea who Michelle Zauner was, nor had much interest in the topic, before picking this up. I was very pleasantly surprised. Her words a full of poetry, and deep memory and emotion. Her descriptions of foods, which might seem excessive in another context, instead wrote a love letter to both her mom and her Korean culture, with the bittersweetness of memory of things--and people--now lost. It feels weird to rate memoirs as if I can judge the quality of someone’s life. This book was heart-wrenching and gripping. I’m glad it was my final book for this challenge as I feel emotionally scrubbed raw from the inside out after reading it. Highly recommend.
4.5 stars rounded up for the expressive beautiful writing. This was laid out so well from start to finish. Finding your identity, coming of age, mother/daughter relationship, finding love, caregiving, father/daughter relationship, grief. Definitely recommend.
This was a good memoir. I did the audio book and always enjoy it when the author reads it. 3.5-4 stars
