Michelle Zauner is a Korean American and she loses her Korean mother to cancer. This book explores her grief, her relationships with both parents, and extended family. The author also grapples with her identity and worries that the loss of her mother means the loss of her own sense of self.

There are strong connections between Michelle and her mother around food and we are treated to descriptions of various Korean foods and that made me yearn to try some of the things menti

I’m not sure why this didn’t quite resonate with me. It had all the right ingredients but just didn’t quite reach my heart.

I picked this based on its title, for some reason thinking it would be a light, humorous read. It’s not at all. It’s a sentimental memoir about a twenty something who loses her mother to cancer. I haven’t been lived to tears by a book in a long time, but this one did it. I think I would have appreciated this more if I was more familiar with Korean cuisine, which plays a major role. But still, it was very moving.

Such a difficult read, due to personal cancer losses... I relate to so much of her pain.
Having visited Korea years ago, it was neat to hear Michelle Zauner describe places I have visited in a different country.
