This started out with a devastating Florida hurricane, a birth, and some deaths. The new baby named after that hurricane, Wanda, who later had to ask "Why?" Why indeed. To remind everyone of that horrible event and forever keep her on the sidelines? But her difficulties growing up and a concerned neighbor teach her to survive once Florida begins to go under water. Wanda, Phyllis, and a couple other great characters made me care what was going to happen next.

Stories of a global destruction, often by flood, in which a small group of particularly virtuous people survive to repopulate the land is common in ancient cultures. I suppose that it is natural that our contemporary age would seek meaning in such stories. This is another dystopian tale in which society is decimated by the ravages of global warming. These books are largely depressing. Hope is to be found in the survivors who are willing to form a more just and peaceful society. This ending felt

What I appreciate about this book is the forward thinking of Brooks-Dalton. What happens when Mother Nature pushes us out of our habitats? What does the United States become as our coast lines move inward? What if prepping isn't enough? This is the heart of The Light Pirate. This book will make you think, but in a fun fictional way through Wanda. Wanda is born during a hurricane and grows old as the world changes.
