This is a inspiring and educational read. It’s one of those books that you gasp out load while reading it as the horrors of war really come to the forefront in this book. This is a story of five parts and I really enjoyed the first three parts. Part one deals with the protagonist Louis Zamperini's childhood and running career and I really enjoyed this introduction to Louis as I felt I really understood this man and knew how he survived the horrors of war and the physiological and physical pain h ...more

This was a very difficult book to read. Louis Zamperini, an Olympic track athlete, drafted into the air force during the Second World War, goes down in the Pacific, captured by the Japanese and held in subhuman conditions by sadistic guards for more than two years. Although the author avoids maximizing the shock value of the horrors of this individual’s story, the brutality remained sickening. More disturbing is the reality that we continue to brutalize and degrade our enemies. The book is well ...more

The history was definitely 5 star, but the description of the suffering made it impossible for me to read more than 50 pages at a time. WWII Pacific armed forces are truly HEROS who must NEVER be forgotten! Their monument in DC is not nearly large enough!

Wow! This is an amazing story of an Olympian and World War II veteran. I could not help but fall in love with Louie Zamperini - he has a spirit about him that people flock to like moths to light. This book shows why the WWII vets are known as the Greatest Generation.

An instant classic. And instantly one of my all-time favorite books. Not only is the subject matter (Louie Zamperini's story) astounding, but the writing (Laura Hillenbrand's handiwork) is also excellent.

I consider this a must-read.
