Going into this I had not realized it was a book of short stories and I literally gasped when the first one ended. Once I got over the shock and disappointment of that I came to like this structure and how the stories were all related in some way, even if some much more than others. This book is written as a series of short stories, all of which give the reader some insight into the main character, Olive Kitteridge. I found this book quite thought- provoking. It was easier for me to read just one or two short stories, then reflect. My take-away is that family members, friends, neighbors and acquaintances might have quite different perspectives on a person. 4.5 stars. I really enjoyed this book. I enjoyed how complex Olive was and how she has interacted with other people. I do kinda wish that some of the "stories" had more of a conclusion to them, but overall I really liked how this book was written. I did the audiobook and I feel that MAYBE it would have gotten the full 5 stars had I read it.

My rating of this book changed from a 3-star to a 5-star book after reading this book for the second time. The words were what grabbed me the second time, and the format of the compilation of short stories did not throw me because I was prepared for it.
