It is set post-WW2 (1950’s) in an idyllic English countryside. In this first book, Flavia finds a dying man in her garden and her career as a young detective extraordinaire jumps from there.

Why did I wait so long to read this book? I don't know, but I am so happy that I have read it now. I think the fact that the main character of the book is only 11 years old made me think it would be a juvenile read. So not the case!!! I thought Flavia was a wonderful character! She is so smart and funny. I loved her interactions with her family, especially her oldest sister. She is very intelligent and mature beyond her years in many ways, but she is still believable as an 11-year old. The myste

Part Harriet the Spy, part, Sherlock Homes deduction, all cozy mystery. Precocious (and rather unbelievable) Flavia seeks out and follows the clues to solve the mystery, making the police look not completely bumbling, but close. A fun, light read, although nothing spectacular, although I'll admit I learned quite a bit about stamps and never thought they could be so fascinating.
