This one is the first in a 5-part series. I'm really enjoying this modern day genius Nancy Drew. This 11-year-old is one smart cookie. I'm already 100 pages into the second one. Good summer book.

This book is like a really elaborate, delicious sounding, expensive dessert. It looks beautiful when when it arrives and the first bite is soooooooo enjoyable but then when each succeeding bite, the sweetness become stronger. By about half way through, it is just so sugary that you want to send it back unfinished but there is something about it that is still enticing so, against better judgment, you eat a few more bites. Finally you realize you've finished the whole dessert and are left with a c

I had to abandon this as I ran out of time and my library loan expired. Perhaps I will try to borrow it again in the future to finish it, but I'm not all that bothered.
Perhaps it was the narrator whose voice was quite grating, but I suppose that even in print I would have swiftly decided that Flavia is an odious, precocious tween as well as a condescending snob. I've had this book sitting on my shelf for years. Finally started the series revolving around Flavia de Luce and her family. She is an eleven year old young girl brilliant in her knowledge of life and chemistry. A murder has occurred and leave it to Flavia to figure it out. You can't help but love Flavia. Continuing with Bradley's series is a must.

If you like Flavia de Luce, the 11 yr old protagonist in this series, you will probably really like these books. I, however, did not like Flavia, and I would have enjoyed this story much more were it not told from her perspective. The substance of the mystery was decent, but the style of storytelling - and primarily the main character - were definitely not my cup of tea.

Ok so this book was ok. I think I was attracted to the cover and the character so I built it up in my head. It's a solid 3 stars. It was a fairly quick read (it took me 4 work shifts to read. So not that long.) I haven't given up on the series. I plan to go on to the next one.
