How did I miss this delightful novel when it was published 3 or 4 years ago? I can't wait for our Athen's Book Review to discuss it tomorrow! Flavia is a wonderful character, and there isn's a dull moment in all of the 300+ pages! Usually in a mystery there is a bit of a lull where you can skim for a few pages, not in this book! It is delightfully fast moving because she is a child and you know how they move! So, so, so FUN to read a mystery without profanity, overt sexual scenes, and excellent ...more

I am not usually a big fan of murder mysteries, but I did enjoy this one. Totally unbelievable and ridiculous, but a lot of fun. Flavia is a wonderful heroine.

This took a long time to get into it (I see it's taken me about a month to read it!), and once I did get into the story, it still didn't grab me. I found it quite confusing and kept having to go back to check things I wondered if I'd missed. At the same time, some things were unnecessarily repeated which I found tedious.

I also found the narrator of the story a strange choice. Told in the first person by an 11 year old girl, who, while very mature for her age, still exhibits characteristics of ch

This book is like a really elaborate, delicious sounding, expensive dessert. It looks beautiful when when it arrives and the first bite is soooooooo enjoyable but then when each succeeding bite, the sweetness become stronger. By about half way through, it is just so sugary that you want to send it back unfinished but there is something about it that is still enticing so, against better judgment, you eat a few more bites. Finally you realize you've finished the whole dessert and are left with a c ...more

This first book in the series is probably a bit clumsy compared to upcoming books in the series (looking at the reviews of others) and I considered giving it 3 stars for the reason. (Actually wish we had an option for 1/2 star ratings.)

But beyond that, who couldn't fall in love with the little mad scientist, Flavia de Luce? I especially love the way she fights with her sisters. I very much look forward to the other books in the series.

I've had this book sitting on my shelf for years. Finally started the series revolving around Flavia de Luce and her family. She is an eleven year old young girl brilliant in her knowledge of life and chemistry. A murder has occurred and leave it to Flavia to figure it out. You can't help but love Flavia. Continuing with Bradley's series is a must. ...more

Spunky little miss, isn't she??? Flavia is the heart if this book..an 11 yr old obsessed with being right, knowledge, poison and chemistry..with two older sister to torture and the run of her 1950's English town. Much much better as an audio than a written book! Glad I gave it a second chance. ...more

Ok so this book was ok. I think I was attracted to the cover and the character so I built it up in my head. It's a solid 3 stars. It was a fairly quick read (it took me 4 work shifts to read. So not that long.) I haven't given up on the series. I plan to go on to the next one. ...more

I just could not get into this book. At first glance I thought that I would enjoy it but after reading a third of the book and just not finding a catch to hold my attention I decided to just give up.

3.5 stars.

A fun read overall, though I️ do think Flavia was a bit too smart for what her character’s age would suggest. Still, I’ll probably try to read the next one sometime soon.
